Modernista Homemade Swap- Again!

Another swap. I’m addicted. What can I say?? And after this one, even more so!

ModernistaBedroom-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

This round of the Modernista Homemade Swap was for the bedroom. Each round has been for a different room in the house, the dining room, kitchen, sewing room, living room. My partner wanted pillowcases for her main item and a fabric storage box or bowl was her idea for the little item. Her colors were bright and she’s seems to be a bit like me with her love of bright greens and blues! Yea!

ModernistaBedroom-Bundle-ImFeelinCrafty

So I made the pillowcases. Remember these? You can get the whole French seam pillowcase tutorial here.

ModernistaBedroom-Bowl2-ImFeelinCrafty

Then…. My lovely sponsor and blogging pal, Michele from Michele Made Me, made these exquisite fabric bowls on her blog with a wonderful tutorial (huge round of applause from me right here) to go along with it. As soon as I saw the bowl, I knew I had to make it for my partner!

There’s some machine sewing and some hand sewing. I used to say I don’t hand sew anything. I now stand corrected. I LOVE hand sewing. Why switch after all these years??? I just realized I can take it with me! Hello! Looooove it! (If you watch Dragon Tales, I am sure you can here Weesie singing LOOOOVE it!)

ModernistaBedroom-BowlInside-ImFeelinCrafty

The bowl is super easy to make. You’ve got to try it. Can you tell I like it? I only took a hundred pictures of it! I think everyone is getting one from me for Christmas! :) shhhh…. Actually, both of these projects were easy and addictive!

And on to what I received!!

MOdernistaColorIDeas-Imfeelincrafty

This is one of my favorite pictures from my wedding. And it’s also the picture I gave to my secret partner as a color inspiration board.

ModernistaBedroom-Bundle-Gracefulily

I was a bit surprised to open the package! Actually a LOT surprised! Talk about secret! My partner, Graycefulily, didn’t post any progress pictures on the flickr group so I was not expecting this. It’s perfect!

ModernistaBedroom-Littles-Gracefulily

I said I wanted a pillow cover or something for my room. And for my little I needed a little glasses case! Love them both! And I love my little extra goodies too! And now I’m inspired to start working on my husband’s Christmas present quilt that I was supposed to have done by now!

ModernistaBedroom-Dtl-Gracefulily

The quilting on my pillow cover is very cool! And I love that she threw in a little hand stitching.

Now you can probably tell why I’m addicted to these things!

What I know about Swaps!

I’ve been doing swaps for about the last year maybe? Since last June. I’m going to tell you what I know about them. But I have to give a warning… They are addictive! So if you start, just beware…

 PouchSwap-Outside-I'mFeelin'Crafty

Pretty LIttle Pouch Swap

I’ve had a lot of questions about the swaps, so I thought I’d tell ya what I know! And if you know more, please add comments below for others to learn from!

All the swaps I do are flickr based. You basically have to use flickr. Let’s step back a minute… How did I learn about them to begin with? I would scan flickr now and then and I kept finding amazing things people had made for this swap or that swap. I had no clue what a swap was, but eventually I put two and two together and realized that a swap is literally a swap! Hello!

ModernistaSwap-HomeIs-I'mFeelin'Crafty

Modernista Homemade Swap

So I started seeing a theme between some of these pieces I like and which swaps these artists were participating in. Most swaps require a good history of swapping. But you have to start somewhere, huh? So I wrote to the group administrators and told them I was interested in playing along, but I had no history…. They took a look at my flickr page and let me in.

DollQuiltSwap-To-ImFeelinCrafty

Doll Quilt Swap

Most of the ones I do, you have to be approved to join. And others you have to be invited. Of course, each swap has their own requirements.

ModernSheMade-HoopArt-I'mFeelin'Crafty

Modern She Made Swap

How they work. All the ones I do are blind swaps. Meaning who you are making something for is not the same person who is making something for you. AND… The person you are making something for doesn’t know you are making something for them! So you can’t ask them directly what they like and what they don’t like!

ModernistaSwap-Sewing Machine Cover- I'm Feelin' Crafty

Modernista Homemade

If you can’t talk to them, how do you make them something that they are going to like?? You stalk them. Yep. No restraining orders here. The more stalking the better! When you get your partner’s info, it includes their likes and dislikes and all their social media outlets. Like their blog, their pinterest page, their flickr page, and anything else you want to share!

Kitchen Mini-1- I'm Feelin' Crafty

Modernista Homemade

Now you have your partner. You can start stalking. But there’s another component to the whole swap thing… And that’s the fact that you really need to stay up to date on all the progress pictures being added to the flickr group for the swap. You are asked to comment on as many progress photos as you can. Why would you want to comment on so many pictures? Because you don’t know who your partner is. And your partner, more than likely, is going to post progress pictures with questions. And the more you comment, the more likely your end product is going to be perfect for you! You are answering questions and helping guide your fellow artists in making the perfect gift for you. And you are also letting your partner learn more about your likes and dislikes based on the comments you share!

ModernSheMade-PinCushin2-I'mFeelin'Crafty

Modern She Made Swap

Then you make something cool, mail it off and get a wonderful package in the mail just for you!

Most swaps also send little goodies with the main package. So be sure to know the swaps guidelines on that too! I didn’t realize that at first and almost sent mine out without the extra goodies!

So what swaps do I do? The two main ones that I have loved are the Modernista Homemade Swap and the Modern She Made Swap. I recently joined the Pretty Little Pouch Swap, that was a lot of fun! And I’ve also just started the Doll Quilt Swap and the Fab Little Quilt Swap.

And a few that I like, but haven’t participated in yet are the Fab Little Pincushion Swap and the For the Love of Solids Swap.

If you swap, let us know your favorite swaps, too!

Modernista Homemade Swap #3

Yep, I did it again… I signed up for three swaps this spring. Why?? I don’t know. I can’t seem to say NO. Luckily there is only one due a month…

ModernistaSwap-MyProject-I'mFeelin'Crafty

The Modernista Homemade Swap was last month. I almost missed the deadline too…. I even wrote to the Swap Mama this long email about how I couldn’t get it done on time, blah blah blah… I never heard back from here and then saw that the deadline had been changed from Saturday the 30th to today, the 1st!!! Yea!!! So luckily I’m going not to be kicked out of the swap next round…..

ModernistaSwap-PillowOutisde-I'mFeelin'Crafty

My partner originally had one color scheme, but then moved and changed her color scheme. With the swaps you are supposed to ‘stalk’ your partner, since you can’t talk directly to them. So I checked out her new pinterest page and it was full of pictures of grey, white and teal. And there were also images of art that said things like, ‘Love builds a happy home’ and ‘Love is spoken Here.’

ModernistaSwap-Sketch-I'mFeelin'Crafty

As soon as I saw the colors and the art picks, I knew exactly what I wanted to do….

ModernistaSwap-Pillow-I'mFeelin'Crafty

I had been wanting to make this heart since I had seen it around the web time and time again. Now I had the perfect opportunity!

I used the same technique that I used to make my Where I Live postage stamp quilt. I love watching it shrink! Except for those quick moments of fear when you turn it over and the corners don’t line up because you haven’t finished sewing a section. It happens a couple of times. Then I remember that’s the 1/4inch allowance that I haven’t sewn yet… Oh, yeah, and then I’m back on!

ModernistaSwap-HomeIs-I'mFeelin'Crafty

I tried my hand at a little embroidery work. Inspired by the art prints I had seen. It’s not the best, but I think it turned out cute. I was going to make more of one of the saying, but then got nervous that my partner might not like my lack of embroidery skills, so I left it sweet and short!

ModernistaSwap-MyProject2-I'mFeelin'Crafty

For the small second item, I made a pinking shears pouch. It’s a quilted pouch with bound edges.

ModernistaSwap-Pouch-I'mFeelin'Crafty

Even though the pouch is probably not going to be used in the same room as the pillow, I still made them match. And I used all my teal scraps…. STay tuned for a tutorial on how I did the pouch.

ModernistaSwap-PillowBack-I'mFeelin'Crafty

And I decided to add a little something to the back. As I was cutting the pieces for the front, I had a few extra, so I threw it on the back. And it turns out the back actually holds it own as a design, I think!

ModernistaSwap-PillowBackDtl-I'mFeelin'Crafty

I love how the stitching on the sides makes it look really clean and fresh.

And I received my package! The colors are perfect for our living room. Love the orange, brown and yellows. My swap gift was a lap quilt and some quilted coasters from a.quilter.2. Too cute!

ModernistaSwap-package-AQuilter2

And now I’m on to my next swap and think I’ve already figured it out! This is going to be a month of quilting for sure. Hopefully I can get a little something else in….

To Do List- Swap Quilted Magnets with a Tutorial! Done!

Another project crossed off my To Do List! Mini Mini quilts! For your refrigerator or note board!

Unfortunately, these were not my idea! I wish I was the brains behind this project! I was inspired by this picture by A Cup and a Catch Up. Her’s are fantastic with the hand stitching on there…

My partner for the Modernista Homemade Swap had these in her mosaic, and I fell in love with them instantly!! I just had to make a batch. And now I’m actually making another batch for a Christmas present and then I want some too…

I couldn’t find a tutorial for these, so thought I’d show you how I made mine! You can probably figure it out, without my tutorial, but…

Step 1: Gather materials! You’ll need a cutting tool and mat, magnets, batting and SCRAPS! And tiny scraps at that, since we’re making teeny tiny quilts!

Step 2: Cut the batting and the back fabric into 2″ squares.

Step 3: Cut your scraps into even smaller pieces for the front of the magnet. Some of them I just cut on the fly and put them together. Others I made little patterns for. Here are some of the patterns I used.

Others I just cut and sewed and then trimed down to 2″ square. So these little patterns aren’t very detailed by any means!

Step 4: Sew together all your pieces so that you have all the fronts put together.

Step 5: Quilt all the fronts to the batting.

Step 6: Put together the quilted piece and the back piece, right sides together. Stitch them together. Remember to leave a hole to pull the mini mini quilt through and also make sure it’s big enough to put in your magnet.

Step 7: Clip the corners and iron over the back fabric to help the seams lie flat. Then turn it right side out by pulling it through the hole.

Step 8: Insert magnet.

Step 9: Topstitch!

Then repeat and repeat and repeat… You get the idea! Until, Wah-la!, you have all your magnet!

What a perfect Christmas present, huh??? I LOVE these things!!!

Modernista HomeMade Swap, Received!

And I love it! Look at all my goodies!

The first item I got totally shocked me! I so wasn’t expecting it! Honestly, I don’t exactly remember what I asked for in this swap, except for pot holders. I know I didn’t ask for anything holiday related and I don’t think I asked for a table runner. But during the swap Lee from May Chappell posted this picture of the table runner and I fell in love with it!

I ‘favorited’ it. But since I didn’t ask for holiday, I wrote it off as she wasn’t my partner. I also kinda regretted not asking for something holiday! Ha! Lucky Me! I got it anyway! Be sure to check out her tutorial!

Then it came in the mail!!! It’s awesome!

I love the quilting! And I love how the quilting shows on the back. Very cool!

The other part of my package was the pot holders I’d asked for. Our kitchen is bright green and I told her that I love bright colors.

Funny story… Our kitchen was bright green, then we remodeled and changed the green to a little darker color green, slightly toward the oliveish side, but not olive… It got dark feeling to me so we re-painted it… Ends up we repainted almost the exact same color that it originally was! Anyway….

So check out these colors! FANTASTIC!

ok, so what do you think? My old pot holder? Or the new ones??? hehehe… I think it’s time my old one moved on to the place in the skies that old pot holders retire to….

New Fabric!! Yea!!

I don’t order fabric online all that much. Mostly because I haven’t done it that much and I always get nervous about what’s it really going to look like when I get it…

But I’m liking it more and more these days!! I mean look at this batch. Whatd’ya think????

So these three, not real sure what I’m going to do with.. The elephants are a linen fabric, which I wasn’t actually expecting, but I like anyway. The rest are for the swaps I’m participating in…

The first swap I’m doing is another Round of Modernista Homemade. This round the room we’re making an item for is the kitchen. I’ve decided to do a mini quilt.

Using these fabrics….

And the second swap is another round of Modern She Made. Last time the piece had to have a circle, this time it’s a triangle. I’ve decided on the design (please ignore the horrible picture!). But I can’t decide if it’s going to be a mini quilt or a sewing machine cover. hmmmm….

Either way I’ll use these fabrics….

What do you think of these fabrics??? Love ‘em? Hate ‘em? Get rid of one or another??? Add anything?

Another Sewing Machine Cover

Another Swap

And another sewing machine cover!!

I don’t know what happened to this week!! OK, maybe I do… Just got home from a little week away at our in-laws vacation house, I’m scrambling to get ready for a job interview (ahhhh!!!), have the kiddo and husband at home with a dog we’re pet sitting…. Oh, and the Olympics that I somehow get mesmerized by. And it’s already Wednesday and I haven’t shown you the swap project I made!!!

A while back I posted my sketches for the swap and based on the comments I ended up going with the Modern tree design. My partner (I can’t say who she is yet, since she probably hasn’t actually received it yet…) requested a sewing machine cover and/or a sewing caddy. I was also inspired by my partner’s mosaic to use a bird in the design.

I used my own tutorial for the sewing machine cover and a design for the birds that I had come up with when I first started quilting. I love these little guys, although my husband thinks they need a body… I think they have a body… hmmm….

The swap was for one main gift and a small gift. So for the small gift I used my scraps from the cover and did a quick sewing caddy! This one is meant to go over an ironing board, so I added weights on the opposite side of the pockets. With the weights it won’t slide off once you add in your scissors, etc!

Partner, I hope ya like them!!!

And if you noticed, I mentioned sewing machine cover twice up above… That’s not a misprint… I got my swap package today and it’s a sewing machine cover!!! I love it!! My partner, Crystal from So She Stitches, used my sewing machine cover tutorial and got it right on! It fits perfectly!

The whole family was ooing and ahhhhing at lunch when the box came! My son has already taken the pin cushion and was feelin’ around to see if he could also have the little fabric box..

I love swaps! I love the things I made… (hehehe) and I LOVE the things I received!!!
