Modern Sampler Quilt Along Blocks G, H and I

Man! I’ve been playing catch up on this quilt along, the Modern Sampler Quilt Along with Salty Oat!

You know I’m more of a bright color kinda quilter, so this one has been a challenge. But I like the low contrast with a pop of color! But this is a very challenging pattern and I got really frustrated doing these blocks! I think they came out quite nice despite the lack of instructions!

This is Block G. I didn’t do any measuring around the curves. And I like how they turned out. Not perfect, but I think they are pretty close to perfect.

And Block H. This turned out pretty nice. A LOT of practice with Y seams for one stinkin’ 12″ block! Has anyone else made this one? I’m curious how you made it. I considered doing it as an english paper pieced block, like I sew hexagons by hand. But then decided that would take way longer than I wanted to spend on this one….

And lastly, Block I. I’m actually in love with this one! It’s pretty near perfect! (If I do say so myself…) I took my friend Debbie’s advice and did the strips as paper pieced triangles. It worked! Nice and quick!

And look at those Y seam corners! Oh, yes!

ModernSampler-Whole-ImFeelinCrafty

Please ignore the horrible picture, but this is the quilt so far! I do like the quilt, but making it has had some frustrated moments!

Three more blocks down. Nine blocks done. Three to go!

Friendship Bracelet Quilt

Another finish!

Yea! I have to say, I love the pattern, but wasn’t really excited about the quilt…. But the more I look at it, the more I like it!

A SMQG friend is also a quilt designer and author and all around pretty cool lady! She’s Blair Stocker, AKA WiseCraft. She asked for pattern testers fir her Friendship Bracelet Quilt and I was looking for an easy idea/pattern for a memory quilt, so I said YES! But then it ended up it wasn’t going to work well for my memory quilt, but I did have a jelly roll that would work quite nicely!

It’s a jelly roll that I’ve had for years and never used becuase the fabrics are exactly me so I haven’t used them. For years, did I mention that? I’ve gotten so used to only quilting with mostly solids, it’s been a little hard to embrace this one. But it’s growing on me!

FriendshipBracelet-Quilting-ImFeelinCrafty

The quilt went together very easily and quickly! I’ve seen the pattern in solids, and I think I’m just drawn more to solids. It’s a GREAT pattern for newbie’s! The directions are great and easy to follow.

It all went together so quickly. Until…. I started quilting! I’m pretty sure the quilting took way longer than all the rest of the quilt construction! I really want to start keeping track of how many hours a quilt takes. Does anyone else to this?

I did the quilting with a freehand square spiral. I also did a big one on the bottom, until it ran out of quilt nad then I moved and did two smaller square spirals on the top!

FriendshipBracelet-Back-ImFeelinCrafty

I had a couple of strips left over so I sewed them together to start the back layout. And the rest just evolved with the fabrics I had on had that coordinated!

And I get to use another one of my labels! Since they are dated, I can only make 48 more this year!

A little behind the scenes moment… My lovely husband of 10 years today (the 20th) is nice enough to hold most of my quilts. (He does grumble a little bit.) shhh…. But he does help!

The more I look at it the more the contrast between the stripes show and that makes me love it more!

Spring Flowers

I’ve become the one in charge of updating our PTSA bulletin board at school and I wanted some paper flowers for Spring Break. My friend passed on a tutorial she’d used and I fell in love!

PaperFlowers-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

I’m warning you though… These are super addictive!

The tutorial is from Ash and Crafts. And it’s so easy and makes such pretty flowers!

You technically don’t need the pattern, but I think it makes it easier. You can download the pattern on her website.  She recommends 60lb paper, but I’ve just been using 20 or 24lb and it’s working fine. The 60lb will probably last longer, but…. So you print the pattern, cut the paper, roll it a little and add a little hot glue and that’s pretty much it! Yep! You’ve got to try it!

April Squiggles bring May….

This month’s BOM for the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild BOM quilt is squiggles!

SeaSlabBOM-April-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

I was terrified of squiggles! I’ve seen them around, but have never understood how to make them. I assumed a bunch of clipping curves, etc…. But no! It’s way easier than I thought it was going to be!

SeaSlabBOM-April-Squiggles-ImFeelinCrafty

I used this great tutorial on Lily’s Quilts by Ann of Play Crafts! It is so easy! You basically put two pieces of fabric on top of each other, cut a sqiggly line and then sew it together and iron flat! Seriously. Not sure what I was afraid of!

SeaSlabBOM-April-Squiggles2-ImFeelinCrafty

Squiggles! And again, like in the last two blocks, I overlapped the months blocks on each other.

SeaSlabBOM-April-NotQuiltedFront-ImFeelinCrafty

But then it started bugging me that it wouldn’t lay flat… and I was wondering it that was going to affect the adding on of each months blocks.

SeaSlabBOM-April-NotQuiltedBack-ImFeelinCrafty

No matter how often I iron these seams flat, they always go back to looking like this…. Not flat…

SeaSlabBOM-April-QuiltedFront-ImFeelinCrafty

So I started quilting….

SeaSlabBOM-April-QuiltedBack-ImFeelinCrafty

And the seams lay flat and there hardly any added bulk at the seams once it gets quilted!

SeaSlabBOM-April-HalfQuilted-ImFeelinCrafty

You can kinda see the difference between the nice flat quilted area and the not quilted areas. I also realized I wanted to not do too much quilting on the outside pieces. I want to wait to do those until the next piece is sewn on. You want to sew OVER the seam allowance, so I didn’t want to do much sewing around the perimeter until I add on to it.

SeaSlabBOM-April-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

I need to square it up a bit. And do a bit more quilting before the next block gets added in. But I can’t wait to see which one is next!
