Seahorse Pillow- a cross stitch project

I hate that summer is coming to an end and I feel like I haven’t done much… My husband keeps reminding me about the pandemic… But today we just found out that the kiddo got two extra days before school starts!

With that, I have a series of beachy pillows I want to share to make me feel like I’m at the beach instead of ‘Staying Home and Staying Safe!’

I’m really in love with how this cross stitch pillow turned out! My niece is in love with seahorses. You might even remember the seahorse stuffie I made her from her very own design…  Well, when I got the Summer 2017 issue of Crossstitcher Magazine and there was a seahorse alphabet in there, I knew I had to make it for her!

I have to say I loved working on this on my trip to the beach last year, but I was sad I wasn’t able to put it lall together before I left the beach. Ha. but sometimes swimming in the Gulf is more important that sewing… sometimes… Ha!

Typically when I pick cross stitch projects, I’m not a fan of the outlining.  I almost left this one without the outlines, but I’m so glad I switched gears and actually followed the directions! I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have been as cool. I really love this alphabet.

Although, I’m just posting this, it is an older project. One I made before my obsession with invisible zippers.

And how about that seahorse and octopus fabric??? A perfect match. I’ve been hoarding this fabric and it was perfect for this project!

A Little Tooth Fairy Pillow!

Did you know I’m obsessed with cross stitching? I did it as a kid in 1985 or 1986ish. Then it went to the wayside… But I’m back to cross stitch. And I have way too many patterns to make than time to make them!

But I was able to get the kiddo’s tooth fairy pillow down just in the nick of time. I had been saying I wanted to make him a pillow for ages. Then I saw this pattern and fell in love. So I started. Then I finished, literally, about a week before he lost his first tooth. Right before his 8th birthday. He was late to get his teeth, so late to loose them…

Each time I do a cross stitch project, I seem to use a different method. For this one I used the soluble grid. I loved it while I was stitching! It made the stitching on linen so easy. But then as it dissolved, it made the stitching hard… Maybe I should have washed it again? I don’t know… Can you tell by the pictures? I can tell when I run my fingers over it.

The other learning moment I had on this project was to not work your way into the middle! For the tooth, I did one wing, then the other. Then went back to do the tooth. When I got close to the other wing, I realized that I didn’t have enough space to get my rows in at the same size…Oops! Not sure how it happened actually.

The pattern showed the design on a pocket that was sewn on the front of the pillow. The kiddo didn’t want that. So I made a little pocket on the back. In hindsight, I should have made it bigger. It fits his little teeth perfectly, but it’s a bit small for the tooth fairy to leave her cash!

I also used glow in the dark floss for the tooth and the swirls in the background. And it glows. It didn’t glow enough to get a good picture, so you’ll just have to trust me!

The pattern is by Emma Congdon for Cross Stitcher Magazine Volume 297 and stitched by me!

A Christmas Cross Stitch Pillow!

Well, one of my New Years Resolutions was to get back into blogging and post more than once a week! Not doing so well on that resolution, but still trying…. Anyway…. I seem to be loving pillows right now! So I thought I’d show you one more that I made.

I’m soooo loving cross stitch right now! I did it as a kid, but I’m loving that it’s making a comeback and making a comeback with modern designs. It does take me forever, but I love it.

And so what do I do with it? I piece and quilt it, of course!

ChristmasCrossStitch-Pellon-ImFeelinCrafty

The first cross stitch project I did when I picked it back up used the traditional Aida fabric. It’s super easy to use, but who wants to cuddle up with it? Not me. So I knew I had to find a different way…. I picked up this Pellon Sticky Grid and Tear. It works great!

I layer a piece of quilting cotton with a piece of muslin or another layer of quilting cotton and cut the grid paper to fit inside my hoop. The instructions say not to leave it on the fabric for very long. I just look loosely attached it and it stayed on for months! It didn’t leave a residue or anything.

And don’t look at my back stitching! I just do it! I didn’t even know that there are particular ways you are supposed to cross stitch that makes the backs look pretty too… I’ll try that next time…

My lines aren’t quite as straight as they could be with Aida fabric, but once you see it as an overall design, I think it looks quite nice.

I pulled fabric from the colors in the pattern and did a little HST border. I wasn’t sure about the polka dot yellow for a while. I feel much better about it now, though. I gave it to my step-Mom for Christmas and didn’t realize her bedding is yellow! Perfect fit!

ChristmasCrossStitch-Star-ImFeelinCrafty

The pattern is by Tiny Boxes Design and is a downloadable pattern. She has a couple of other patterns, I’d like to make, too! The pattern actually says ‘go Yell it…’, but I made it the real words of the song and changed ‘Yell’ to ‘Tell’. And I added the star on top with variegated yellow thread. It took me forever to figure out how I wanted to do the star!

I’ve got some more cross stitch projects in the works! Do you do cross stitch? I’m loving it, but it’s putting my double sided hexagon quilt on the back burner! oops….
