Another Handmade Backpack

OK, I’m a pretty bad blogger these days. it’s been a while since I showed anything… I missed back to school, when most people are blogging about back packs! And I made this back pack a while ago… But despite all that, here I am!

The first backpack I made was really cool! I loved the alien backpack! It was designed by the kiddo and so is this one! I don’t know where the design came from, but I have to say it was quite a bit easier to put together than the alien!

I didn’t use a pattern, but there are some great backpack patterns and tutorials out there! There’s one by Crazy Little Projects that is pretty similar to the one I made. I also love Sew Sweetness Bags and she has two backpack patterns, the Cumberland and Edelweiss patterns. And I like the pattern that So Sew Easy has on their blog. It’s small, but you can enlarge it for a larger kiddo or yourself. I haven’t made any of these patterns, but they can help you make your own, if you don’t want to wing it like I did!

On the inside I used a laminated cotton fabric. A bright laminated cotton fabric! I made this while I was at a retreat and I didn’t take a non-stick foot, and it did not treat me nicely! But I pushed on anyway!

I love to add key fobs…

The design on the outside is what the kiddo designed. It was much easier than the alien, but it was still tricky! Keeping those lines straight wasn’t as simple I thought it would be and especially without the right foot.

The other thing I think all backpacks should have is the side pockets. I always include elastic, so when it’s not being used, it scrunches up close ot the backpack and doesn’t flop around.

In the back I padded the straps and angled them out a bit.

And the kiddo liked it! That’s the best part of the whole thing!

Haley’s Seahorse- A Kid Designed, Momma Made Project

One thing I love to do, besides quilting, is make stuffies from kid’s drawings. One of my best friends daughters loves seahorses, so when we found out we’d be in town for her birthday, I knew I wanted to make her something. And she just happened to have a drawing she had made of a seahorse!

So I made a stuffie!

This one was a little easier than some of the others I’ve made, but still fun. I just happened to have the seahorse fabric is my stash. And, I also just happened to have the fleece that matched the seahorse fabric. (Is that a sign that I may have too much in my stash?

I really wanted to get the eyes right and the baby. I don’t understand the eyes really, but she drew them that way for a reason. Even her parents commented that I had done the eyes right. So the shape meant something to her.

It’s a rough life for baby seahorses out there. As cute as this one was, it had a rough life and didn’t last long in this world. Unfortunately, she disappeared within a couple of days. In hindsight, I should have attached the baby with a ribbon or something. Lessons learned!

When I gave Haley the present, I included the picture of it that she had drawn in the bag. The first thing she pulled out was this bad computer print of her drawing. She was kinda confused as to why I was giving her her drawing for her birthday. She realized there was more in the bag,  and I wish I had a picture of her face when she pulled this guy out of the bag. Her eyes were huge, her mouth fell open and she exclaimed, This is my drawing! that made it all worth it!

A Little Auction Creature- Kid Designed, Momma Made

One thing I love to make are stuffies (what we call stuffed animals) and dolls from kids drawings! And every year I also offer this as a thing at the kiddo’s school auctions. Rarely, do the people who buy them actually cash them in to get made. So I was really excited when the parent who got it last year, actually took me up on the offer! You can see some of the Kid designed, momma made creatures here and here.

This guy doesn’t have a name, but he’s pretty cute!

These are the directions I received. He had to be pink, skin color, you know! He comes with a top hat with a purple band and a white crystal on top! So that’s what I did!

AuctionCreature-Side-ImFeelinCrafty

oh, and don’t forget the tail!

AuctionCreature-Scale-ImFeelinCrafty

So my kiddo didn’t design this one, but I felt like it needed a kid for scale! He’s kinda big!

AuctionCreature-Making1-ImFeelinCrafty

And how did I make it?? Well, it took a few trials. I started with the pattern from Ikat Bag that I used for my Pikachu. But then altered a bit here and there. I added the tail and altered the front and head to get the right shape.

I used a good bit of heavy interfacing for the hat and ears. I did have to cut my sample a few times and contact the designer to make sure I was getting the correct orientation of the ears!

And I added a little pouch of the bean bag fill to give it enough stability to stand up straight.

I think my favorite part of the design was the ‘white crystal’ in his hat.

You can look back up at the original drawing to see the picture without the stuffie in it and then look back at this picture. What do you think? Do you think he matches what the designer drew?

AuctionCreature-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

The weird thing is… I love making these, but I’ve never made one for my son. I need to look through his drawings and find a good one to make one for him! I wonder what this years auction will bring!

Another Kid Designed Momma Made Project

Did you see the last Kid Designed, Momma Made project I did? That one was for my son’s auction… This one is a baby gift!

AlienBabyGift-Main-I'mFeelin'Crafty

Last week I was invited to a good friend’s baby shower brunch. It was totally last minute. And it was planned during a week that I was still recovering from surgery and unable to drive. I knew that I couldn’t just run out and buy something. And honestly, I’m not real good at that. SO the other night we were out and my son started drawing….

AlienBabyGift-Dwg-I'mFeelin'Crafty

As he got a little way through his drawing, I knew exactly what I was going to do! This baby coming is the third child in the family. His soon to be middle sister has this little tiny blanket that she carries everywhere! Between that and the drawing, I knew I was going to make the baby brother a little blanket kinda like his sister’s.

The drawing continued, but I knew which part of the drawing would be the one I made. I told my son that I was using his drawing to make the baby a present, but that I wasn’t doing the whole drawing. He was very relieved and said that ‘If you use the whole drawing, it might scare the baby.’ Since the drawing is an alien fighting a ball of fire….

AlienBabyGift-Face-I'mFeelin'Crafty

The striped part became the blanket, and the face and hair is stuffed. So it could be a pillow, or it could be a stuffie… It’s up to him to decide! And the ears are just soft little quilted pieces to love on, like the tag dolls that kids love so much!

AlienBabyGift-Back-I'mFeelin'Crafty

I love turning kids drawings into reality. Only this time, when my son saw it, he was horrified! IT was NOT AT ALL like his picture, according to him. The hair is not hair, but part of the hat and it’s NOT SUPPOSED to be polka dot!!!! AHHHH!!! Well, I think it looks pretty close to the original drawing and it just so happened that the polka dot was the only soft coordinating fabric that I happened to have on hand… I’m happy with it!

AlienBabyGift-Last-I'mFeelin'Crafty

What do you think? Does it look like the original drawing???
