One Hour Basket Teacher Gift

With the holiday giving season coming up, I want to share a bunch of the gifts I’ve made and never shared!

You probably remember the last gifts I shared about and probably remember the UW color scheme… Well, I kinda bought a lot more fabric than I needed for the first gift. So, I decided the end of school year present would be made with he same fabric! Every year since preschool, I have made tote bags for his teachers, with this label as a pocket on the outside.  Last year was the first year he had a male teacher and I wasn’t sure he’d want a tote bag, but I couldn’t not use the label… You can order the printed labels from Spoonflower. And you can download the label here.

So I went with a one hour basket. Yep, one of those one hour baskets that take longer than an hour! I always use the same tutorial I used the first time I made this, from Kelby Sews. It takes me longer than hour becuase I alwyas make them pieced, rather than just a piece of fabric on the exterior.

I started this one by cutting out a bunch of triangles. Did I say a bunch? Way too many… I have no idea what I’m going to do with the rest of them!

I didn’t measure anything when I cut the triangles, but I did try to cut them as close to right triangles as possible without measuring or rulers. Then I sewed them together. Then I trimmed them. I wanted a certain height, but width I wasn’t concerned about. So I aligned my ruler so that I got a 5″ rectangle with the top and bottom edges aligned with the corners of the blocks.

You can tell that they aren’t all the same width, right? And lastly, I quilted as you go onto the batting that gives the basket it’s shape.

These baskets are great and you can give them to anyone for any occasion really! Every year I give the neighbors cookies. How awesome would it be to deliver them in one of these baskets?!? How about one ot hold all the Christmas cards? What would you gift these for?

One Hour Basket Swap

I’m still not participating in the online swaps that I used to love, but I do try to play along with the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild Swaps! I miss the online ones, but I just stay too busy for them. The guild ones are a lot less work so they make up for my lick of online swapping!

This swap was to make a one hour basket! Very simple and easy! But let’s talk the one hour part… I could totally see it being a one hour project is you do NOT do quilting and only use one piece of fabric… But Since it’s a quilting guild, we quilt. And we quilted the one hour basket. So it’s was more like a two hour basket.

I’m on a flying geese kick lately! So my accent on the basket were a few sets of flying geese. I love The Pieceful Kwilter’s no waste flying geese tutorial. I think it’s the best way to make flying geese. They were supposed to all be going north or south, but at the last minute, one row took off towards the west!

The tutorial also includes nice little handles that take about 5 minutes!

Unlike the online swaps, we don’t have partners in the guild swaps. Hence the less time consuming part! So we make our projects and then put them in brown paper bags and pick. So my finished basket made it into a brown bag and then into the hands of another lovely quilter!

And this is the one in the lovely brown bag that I chose! I was floored! I had been snooping around IG and looking at the others that were made. THey were all fantastic, but I had my eye on this one. On the way to the meeting, I even thought to myself, I hope I get that one… THe one with the saying on it….

And I did! I couldn’t believe my luck! Especially after the paint chip challenge with I got the one color I really didn’t want! Now I have to find a spot for this basket! Thank you The Bespoke Outlaw for making me this awesome basket!
