SMQG BOM May Blocks

For this month I’ve been working on quilting my Seattle Modern Quilt Guild BOM a bit more, but I also added a new ‘row’

SeaSlabBOM-May-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

Excuse my photo editing… Something doesn’t look right, but oh well…

You can see the bottom row is this months project. The prompt was sewing with scraps. When I make a quilt, especially a BOM that lasts for a while, I keep a bag of all the scraps from that quilt. I don’t integrate my scraps with the scrap bins until the quilt is all done! So this was easy to do! I had the bag right there and ready to go!

SeaSlabBOM-May-MainMay-ImFeelinCrafty

These are my ‘two’ scrap blocks. I started with a long piece of batting that was close to the height I was looking for. But slightly larger. Then I just started a bit in the middle and kept using my scraps until I ran into where the pieces kinda quilt building on themselves. Then I started over. It’s very log cabin like….

SeaSlabBOM-May-Block2-ImFeelinCrafty

SeaSlabBOM-May-Block1-ImFeelinCrafty

You can see my ‘eyes’ are the center, where I started. Then I’d kinda log cabin around the center, then go off in one direction and come back and go somewhere else! I used only scraps for these, except I did have to cut a little extra white.

I do want to add another thinner strip of this block up the right side, but I ran out of scraps! So I need to do some other blocks and come back to add another row.

SeaSlabBOM-May-Quilting1-ImFeelinCrafty

And I really started making some ‘rules’ for my quilting. Most of the quilting is in the white. Sometimes I’ll quilt in the yellow, but not often. And I am NOT quilting on the grey!

I’ve also found that I don’t want to quilt to the edge until I another block to sew on. I’m using my quilting to sew down my seam allowances, so therefore I need a seam allowance to quilt over!

SeaSlabBOM-May-Quilting2-ImFeelinCrafty

And I’m stitching in the ditch to get from one stop to the other…. I’m loving this one! I just learned about June’s BOM, so I’m excited to get started on it!

April Squiggles bring May….

This month’s BOM for the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild BOM quilt is squiggles!

SeaSlabBOM-April-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

I was terrified of squiggles! I’ve seen them around, but have never understood how to make them. I assumed a bunch of clipping curves, etc…. But no! It’s way easier than I thought it was going to be!

SeaSlabBOM-April-Squiggles-ImFeelinCrafty

I used this great tutorial on Lily’s Quilts by Ann of Play Crafts! It is so easy! You basically put two pieces of fabric on top of each other, cut a sqiggly line and then sew it together and iron flat! Seriously. Not sure what I was afraid of!

SeaSlabBOM-April-Squiggles2-ImFeelinCrafty

Squiggles! And again, like in the last two blocks, I overlapped the months blocks on each other.

SeaSlabBOM-April-NotQuiltedFront-ImFeelinCrafty

But then it started bugging me that it wouldn’t lay flat… and I was wondering it that was going to affect the adding on of each months blocks.

SeaSlabBOM-April-NotQuiltedBack-ImFeelinCrafty

No matter how often I iron these seams flat, they always go back to looking like this…. Not flat…

SeaSlabBOM-April-QuiltedFront-ImFeelinCrafty

So I started quilting….

SeaSlabBOM-April-QuiltedBack-ImFeelinCrafty

And the seams lay flat and there hardly any added bulk at the seams once it gets quilted!

SeaSlabBOM-April-HalfQuilted-ImFeelinCrafty

You can kinda see the difference between the nice flat quilted area and the not quilted areas. I also realized I wanted to not do too much quilting on the outside pieces. I want to wait to do those until the next piece is sewn on. You want to sew OVER the seam allowance, so I didn’t want to do much sewing around the perimeter until I add on to it.

SeaSlabBOM-April-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

I need to square it up a bit. And do a bit more quilting before the next block gets added in. But I can’t wait to see which one is next!

Seattle Modern Quilt Guild BOM 2016

Here we go again! I just finished last years BOM and now I’m starting the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild 2016 BOM!

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

Our first block is Strings. I loved making this one!

IMG_2483

Our awesome quilting member Matt, AKA on IG as odditease, is designing this years quilt. Or should I say designed. this is his version. So this is where we’re going with it.

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Det2-ImFeelinCrafty

I totally want to make a whole whole string quilt! This is an improv quilt. I don’t know that mine is actually 100% improv though…. I haven’t measured any of my fabric. I haven’t used a straight edge to cut the fabric. I haven’t been measuring my batting and I’m doing it as quilt as you go again. So what do you think? Improv or almost improv?

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Step1-ImFeelinCrafty

I’m using random pieces of batting to make up my ‘blocks’ from my pile of batting scraps.

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Step2-ImFeelinCrafty

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Step3-ImFeelinCrafty

Next I randomly cut a bunch of strips and then sewed them together at a random angle. See, no measuring! I started sewing with the middle stripe and then worked my way out from there.

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Step4-ImFeelinCrafty

Then I squared up my block. I still didn’t measure anything, but I did square the block. I think this might be where the improv starts to deteriorate. But I like it!

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Back-ImFeelinCrafty

On the last BOM quilt that I did, I also did it as QAYG, but I wasn’t consistent about ironing my seams open and sewing then in the right direction or leaving more than a 1/4″ seam. This time I’m using a 3/8″ seam and ironing opening. With the bulk of the batting, it helps to have a larger seam allowance to iron the seam.

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Det1-ImFeelinCrafty

I noticed after I made two blocks that both at the print in one corner, so I kept going with it for the other corners and I love how it turned out!

SeaSlabBOM-Feb-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

So with each block, my plan is to include a bit of the next block. So I haven’t sewn together this block.

SeaSlabBOM-March-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

And then I moved into the second block. The March block is Triangles. See how I added a bit of the triangles into the strings? I think I like it. What do you think?

SeaSlabBOM-March-Dtl1-ImFeelinCrafty

Again, there’s no measuring or anything. But check out those grey lines and how they connect! Pure randomness that worked out perfectly!

SeaSlabBOM-March-Dtl2-ImFeelinCrafty

I am a part of critique group and one of the members said it looked like her aunt’s dress from the 70’s…. She said it was a compliment, but I’m not sure.

SeaSlabBOM-March-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

Now I’ve got to get the April block done!!! Sqiggles, coming up!

SMQG Block of the Month Quilt

I finally finished!!!

SMQGBOM-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

If you’ve been reading along for anytime within the last year, you know I’ve been participating in the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild BOM for 2015! I was moving right along until I hit the pile of about 130 little half square triangles…. Then it came to a screeching halt!

SMQGBOM-CloseUp-ImFeelinCrafty

I quilted the top as I sent. Each border I’d piece and then quilt the top and the batting. My only downside with this was that I would forget to include a larger seam allowance. The larger seam allowance helps when ironing open the seams. Typically I don’t iron open, but with the QAYG it helps reduce bulk.

SMQGBOM-Back-ImFeelinCrafty

For the back I used a few left over blocks and more of the fabric from the front. Then I mostly quilted in the ditch around each border. But doing that left a nice big square in the center, so I quilted over a few of the circles that I quilted in the center block.

SMQGBOM-Process-ImFeelinCrafty

I’m super glad I took pictures each month as I went along. I love seeing it ‘grow’! The center is my inside out pineapple pattern. And it grew from there! You can find all the block directions here, if you’d like to make your own.

SMQGBOM-Label-ImFeelinCrafty

And I got to use my new labels! I got a 50 pack of labels that are dated 2016, so I have to make 49 more this year! Ha! I got them from Tagtopia and she was great to work with!

SMQGBOM-InsideOutPineapple-ImFeelinCrafty

SMQGBOM-Bench-ImFeelinCrafty

This, unfortunately, was the only quilt on my First Quarter Finish A Long that I actually finished! Not at all what I planned! Good news is that I at least finished something…

SMQGBOM-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

I”m so excited to have this one done! And it’s going to be well loved in my house!

SMQG BOM- Almost Done

Another installment of the SMQG BOM!

SMQGBOM-Aug-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

I had grand intentions of finishing this last year… I’m almost done, just need to the add the back, but until then, I thought I’d give you an update of the second to last border. It barely fits on my fence anymore!

SMQGBOM-Aug-HST-ImFeelinCrafty

So this last border was a million little half square triangles and it totally knocked me off my rythm…

SMQGBOM-Aug-HSTpile-ImFeelinCrafty

Making the HST’s wasn’t the problem! I made them at a retreat and they went super fast…. I used Debbie’s tutorial on making multiples and it worked great! But then sewing them together and onto the quilt just turned me off for some reason. No idea why. I made the HST’s and shelved the project.

SMQGBOM-Aug-Close-ImFeelinCrafty

All in all, once I finally sat down to do it, it didn’t take long at all. of course… My family is very excited to see this one getting some action again!

SMQGBOM-Aug-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

Hopefully the final installment of this quilt will be coming soon!

Seattle MQG Block of the Month Progress

I’m still loving the Block, or more fitting, the Border of the Month Quilt we’re doing with our local Modern Quilt Guild!

SMQGBOM-May-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

You may notice something different… I took a little detour before adding on the new blocks! I decided to quilt it as I go. Yep, I love a little QAYG action! All the little crosses were the May Border! Between the quilting and the May border, I have been working on this one A LOT lately!

SMQGBOM-May-CenterDtl-ImFeelinCrafty

I started quilting in the middle and did four sets of spirals over the first few months borders. It took a lot longer then anticipated, but I love how the spirals contrast with the Inside Out Pineapple Block!

SMQGBOM-May-MiddleDtl-ImFeelinCrafty

For the March and April borders, I let the March block angle inspire the quilting.

SMQGBOM-May-OutsideDtl-ImFeelinCrafty

SMQGBOM-May-Whole-ImFeelinCrafty

And then comes the May border! Man! Time consuming for sure! But I love it! We used the Raspberry Kiss Block from Wooden Spoon Quilts. I was stumped on the quilting for this border though. So I continued to use Rachel for inspiration and quilted the border the same way that she quilted her Raspberry Kiss Pillow.  I used the cross to quilt a grid along the border.

SMQGBOM-May-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

I’m a little biased, but I think it looks pretty good so far!

SMQGBOM-June-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

And then I added the June border….

SMQGBOM-June-Dtl-ImFeelinCrafty

I’m not sure about this one… I like the border, but am worried it needs more of the white… I was trying to bring back the look of the green solid borders from earlier in the year. I haven’t quilted it yet, so I could replace it. But I don’t know if I want to do that either. Part of me tells myself to stick with my original plan and it will all work out in the end. Part of me tells myself to replace it…. Hmmmmm….

SMQGBOM-June-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

I’m just not sure if the green on green border is too heavy…. We’ll see if I change it. But for now, I’ll leave you in suspense! And I’m off to design the next border!

Medallion BOM with April’s Border

We’re moving along on the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild’s BOM medallion quilt!

SeattleBOM-April-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

This month’s border was super simple! Just adding a simple white and green border on each side. I’ve started a little trend and I’ve been adding in a pop of one of the other colors in each border. Can you find my pop in this border!

SeattleBOM-April-DarkCorner-ImFeelinCrafty

In looking at the pictures, I wonder if I should have not used white… hmmmm…. THat would ahve been nice too, just green and green… Oh, well! Instead I added the dark green to the top corner.

SeattleBOM-April-LightCorner-ImFeelinCrafty

And the light green to the bottom corner. And yep, there’s my pop! A little orange spot.

SeattleBOM-April-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

I guess next time I could actually iron the quilt top, huh! I’m loving this BOM series! You’re welcome to play along. If you do, I’d love to see it. You can get the April instructions here.

SMQG BOM- 3 months in!

As you might have seen, I’ve been playing along with the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild’s 2015 Block of the Month project! I’m loving it!

SMQGBOM-March-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

This year it’s a medallion quilt with a new border each month. January’s center block can be found here and February’s progress is here. This month yours truly designed the border!

SMQGBOM-March-Corner-ImFeelinCrafty

I made a wonky triangle border. Or flip and stitch border. Whatever you want to call it, I love how it turned out. It’s not the easiest border I’ve ever sewn on… The inset seams were a bit of a bugger until I really figured out that it really was inset seams that were needed! I made it a few ways and took it apart until I got the inset seams lightbulb!! I also heard rumor that starch the triangles will help!

SMQGBOM-March-CloseUp-ImFeelinCrafty

Our BOM crew is working together to make this a great quilt. Our friend Yeechi has been setting up the tutorials so they look great! You can get the directions here.

SMQGBOM-March-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

Since I designed this month, mine is obviously done and I am anxiously awaiting next month’s border!!!

Seattle Modern Quilt Guild BOM

Last year I kept saying I was going to play along with the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild block of the month, and I never did. This year I can’t get enough of it!

FebBOM-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

You probably remember last month I made the Inside Out Pineapple Block. And then waited patiently for the next months border! I guess since were doing a medallion quilt, BOM stands for Border of the MOnth!

FebBOM-Orange-ImFeelinCrafty

The new border only makes me more excited about it! I kept with the greens, but added a punch of orange! We have a committee that is making the borders up as we go. The February designer, Yeechi,  did a great job with the border and the instructions! You can always quilt along here!

FebBOM-End-ImFeelinCrafty

Now March is back on me to design! I think I have an idea of what to do!!! I can’t wait to share it! I’m thinking there might be some triangles!

A New Pillow

Yep, I’m still quilting! This time it’s a pillow.

SMGQ-BOM-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

Our Seattle Modern Quilt Guild has started a Block of the Month. January’s BOM was called a Christmas Snowflake. All the other ones I’ve seen the pieces are typically low volume prints for the background and colored print groups for the main snowflake.

SMGQ-BOM-Det-ImFeelinCrafty

But I made mine to go with the quilt I’m making, so again I used the blue, brown and white solids. I wasn’t sure how it would look in solids. I like how it turned out after all!

SMGQ-BOM-2PIllows-ImFeelinCrafty

Last summer I did a swap (I’ve temporarily taken a break form swaps this year!) where we made each other pieces for our bedrooms and I got this fantastic pillow. It’s the one in the back. But don’t they go beautifully together? I love them!

SMGQ-BOM-MissGCute-ImFeelinCrafty

So what to see a little behind the scenes? While I was taking these pictures the pup came in and sat right smack in front of the camera! She’s pretty cute, huh?? Not exactly what I was trying to take a picture of, but once she was there, I took a couple!

SMGQ-BOM-MissGOut-ImFeelinCrafty

And the secret to this photo shoot is that it was actually in my son’s room and not mine! The pillows are meant for our room, which is mostly white and tan with a little bit of blue accent. But I was hanging out in my son’s room and realized his colors were the same, just mostly blue with tan and white. So I took the pics in his room!

SMGQ-BOM-Det2-ImFeelinCrafty

I did a bit of quilting in the corners and then was going to hand stitch the blue and brown areas. Everywhere? Hmmm…. Once I did the middle and the brown, I wasn’t so sure I wanted to do the blue. Nope! No blue! I like it best without. And I love how it plays off the swap pillow that does a bit of hand stitching, but doesn’t use it everywhere.

SMGQ-BOM-Last-ImFeelinCrafty

I made this block the same way I made the Low Volume, Bright Contrast Crosses Postage Stamp Quilt Block, with the lightest weight interfacing. Have you made a Christmas Snowflake block? Did you use solids or prints?
