A Superhero Dog Cape

And not just any Superhero….

Wonder Woman! Yes, as you know, I have a thing for the woman with the invisible plane!

This is actually a Christmas present that I never showed you. On my son’s Christmas List, there is a space to fill out for Santa to bring something to a friend. Last year the kiddo asked Santa to bring our dog, Miss Gilbert, a Wonder Woman cape. And that he did. Santa is good like that with handmade gifts.

So, I’ve studied the cape and I’ll tell you what I can about hoe he made it. It looks as though he downloaded a WW logo from online, like this one maybe. And then cut it out of felt. The yellow pieces are sewn onto the black and then black was sewn onto the red cape fabric.

We do have our own Elf on the Shelf, so I can only figure that he’s the one that measured Miss G for Santa and his helpers. They probably took measurements down her back and around her tummy. The cape goes about half way around her body or so. Then the strap that goes around her tummy and neck are both secured by Velcro.

I can’t find the pattern he used. (He must have kept it in case there are more requests for this year.) If your interested in the pattern let me know and I can probably recreate it. Actually I’m going to pretty soon, because she needs one for the rain!

The little lady seems to not mind it too much. Or at all actually. As long as she can sniff everything on our walks, she doesn’t seem to care what she’s wearing! I’m thinking she needs a rain coat one, too!

I do love how Santa really keeps to the list that the kiddo at our house writes. And I know it’s special to the kiddo to open the handmade presents that he has requested!

A SuperHero Cape Tutorial!

Are you tired of superheroes yet? Well, since we talk about them on a daily basis in our household, we’re not. So hopefully you aren’t either!

For the party favor at the kiddo’s party we gave capes and masks. The kids loved them. I mean Max has a few that I’ve made for him, and he’s still excited about this one. There was one kid that seemed to enjoy it, but then left it at the party ‘because Spiderman doesn’t have a cape.’ OK…

The rest of the kids loved them anyway!

Today I’ll share how simple the capes are to make! (and if you’d rather not make them, I have them on etsy!)

SuperHeroCape-Materials-ImFeelinCrafty

The materials are simple. Solid fabric (I stick with cotton, but you could use something shiny too!), felt, a tiny bit of Velcro, thread and scissors.

To cut out the cape, you want to fold your fabric over the length of the cape and then fold that over the width of the cape. So you’ll end up with one piece, instead of two pieces. You can use the pattern here for the top of the cape. Then the dimensions above for the rest of the pattern.

Then cut out your symbols.

Sew on the Velcro and the superhero symbol of your choice. Be sure that one side of the Velcro is in the front and the other is on the back of the neck pieces.  (yep, I switched cape colors mid tutorial! I’m crazy like that!!)

Then fold over so the right sides are together and sew around the edge. Be sure to leave a hole near the bottom.

Trim the corners and cut slits around the neck to help it iron flat.

SuperHeroCape-Pull-ImFeelinCrafty

Pull the cape through the hole.

SuperHeroCape-Stitch-ImFeelinCrafty

Iron and top stitch you hole! Whoa! It’s red again!

Hand over to your little superhero to save the day! I love (and so does he) how soft and flat it sits around his neck.

What color would your cape be???
